I WRITE in light of the recent correspondence in the Journal concerning the future parking situation at the Maltings and Central Car Park.

The Salisbury Vision team is currently working towards the redevelopment of this site, but this is a long and complex process. While a lot of work has already been done, we are still in the early stages and do not at this point in time have a specific scheme or a developer in place to deliver it.

In light of this it is impossible to say exactly how the development of this area will affect the number and type of parking spaces to be provided.

The vision does anticipate a shift away from long-term parking towards short-term parking in this location. This shift would be in line with Wiltshire Council’s emerging parking strategy and reflects the introduction of park and ride for the city.

Any future scheme must take account of the needs of parking for shoppers and visitors and will also need adequate parking to be commercially viable.

We expect the Maltings and Central Car Park to continue to provide a significant proportion of city centre parking in the future, but until we have a developer in place and a scheme has been designed and consulted upon we won’t know exactly the form this will take.
