AMESBURY Area Board flexed its muscles and rejected the people’s choice over the closing of Bulford Bridge. I was dismayed to see that even though a democratic process was clearly followed by my town council and supported by Bulford Parish Council, the area board decided Wiltshire Council’s recommendations were good enough.
The effect on local services, people and schools of a total bridge closure has not been properly researched by the new unitary “One Council for Wiltshire”. This makes me suspect the decision had already been taken before the area board met, and that only lip service was paid to the people - so much for “Wiltshire - where everybody matters”.
Why are the Amesbury Wiltshire councillors so sure they know what is best for Durrington and Bulford when their own legacy of the near collapse of retail within Amesbury is so clearly evident? I suspect they were too busy with changes to the roads and long speeches at public meetings to really understand what is going on around them.
MARTIN LEE, Durrington
