Downton 2 KC’s FC 0

Wiltshire Senior Cup – 1st Round

Downton team: Hopkins (c); Hartley, D. Newman, Cross; Gain, Holmes, Dorrington, Halski; Sullivan; Liam Hanlon, Thick.

Sub (not used): Camilleri.

Scorers: Sullivan (20), Colborne (70).

DOWNTON edged past Wiltshire Premier Division side KC’s FC in the Senior Cup at Wick Lane on Saturday.

Danny Sullivan opened the scoring after 20 minutes, latching onto Kev Thick’s knock on and although his first shot was saved, he reacted quickest to the loose ball.

Simon Colborne headed in Ben Halski’s cross to make it 2-0 after 70 minutes.

“We were poor in all departments and the dressing room was like a morgue, whereas usually when we win we’re bouncing all over the place,” said manager Jeff Softley.

“Colin Hopkins made one good save but apart from that, he was a spectator.

“We have got a big squad now and you would have thought that the players in the side would be trying to prove they should stay there.

“They just acted like they thought they were going to walk it.”

The Robins face a derby at Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the second round on Saturday, November 7.

“They are flying but it’s a derby so form goes out of the window,” said Softley.

Andy Nash has returned to the club as part of Softley’s coaching staff, in an attempt to shake things up ahead of Saturday’s home game with Petersfield Town.

Downton then go to Warminster Town next Wednesday.
