ATHELETES from Salisbury will be heading to South Africa to compete for international glory.

Four players from Salisbury Hockey Club will be competing at the Masters World Cup and each is looking to lift the trophy for their country.

This year's tournament will be held in Cape Town and it is divided into age groups, from Over 35s to Over 75s.

Salisbury Hockey Club Chair Laura Valjak said: "We are proud of our members representing their countries at the Masters World Cup and delighted about any part Salisbury Hockey Club may have played in helping them to achieve their goals.

"We will be cheering them on and hope they make wonderful memories in Cape Town."

The Salisbury four include: Nic George, Aoife Lawrence, Bede Grossmith and John Youings. Nic and Bede will represent England, whilst Aoife and John will line up for Ireland and Wales.

Nic plays for Salisbury's Women's 1s and first played at the tournament with the Over 35s in 2018.

The Over 40s captain has won two World Cup golds and her England team will be hoping to retain their title.

Nic said: " “I’m honoured to be captaining the squad for this tournament.”

Nic won 2022 World Cup (Image: Matt Salmon) Nic’s fellow Women’s 1s player Aoife Lawrence will be representing Ireland in the Over 35s.

Speaking about her first season with the Irish team, Aoife said: "My first cap was in the home nations in June this year.

Having wanted nothing but a green jersey for years when I was a junior, I am beyond proud and lucky to represent my country in my first Masters World Cup in Cape Town."

John Youings celebrating his 80th celebrating a match between Salisbury Strollers and Bournemouth (Image: Matt Salmon) Salisbury Hockey Club President and stroller John Youings has been playing for Wales Masters since 2015 and went to his first world cup in Australia in 2016 for the over 70’s and then again in Barcelona in 2018.

After that he moved into the Over 75s playing at the 2022 Valencia world cup and now at Cape Town.

John said: “Probably my last year with the 75s, since I will be 82 in January and there are a lot of “youngsters” coming through this year!”

The tournament starts on Saturday October 12 with all but John playing again on October 13.
