AMESBURY Town earned a good point against promotion-chasing Farnborough North End on Saturday.

The first real chance came on 32 minutes when Rory Todd cut in from the right and beat Andy Burt in the Blues goal, but it was disallowed for offside.

Amesbury's first chance came minutes later when Ben Pryce headed Danny Western's corner over at the far post.

Burt was forced into a superb one-handed save just before the break, when Michael Walter sliced a clearance and it seemed destined for the top corner.

Farnborough's top scorer Aaron King appeared as a substitute on the hour, and he had a chance with a close-range header ten minutes later.

Paul Xiberras's shot five minutes from time was well saved by Burt, and Xiberras should have done better with an unmarked header from the resulting cross into the box.

"We defended really well and it was a pleasing point," said Blues boss Glen Butterfield.

"It was the culmination of a good month for us, against a well-organised Farnborough side who knock the ball around well.

"They had more chances to win it than we did, but we were missing a few players and the lads that came in did a good job."

Amesbury were unlucky to suffer their only defeat in February at Fawley last Wednesday, when a late penalty finished them off.

Danny Mockeridge put Fawley ahead soon after the break, but Nic Turpin equalised on 73 minutes and the Blues looked set for a point.

That was until Danny Finnigan was penalised for handball in the box with four minutes to go and Callum Earl converted the penalty.

"Danny was about four feet away from the ball when it was hit, and he had no chance to get his hand out of the way," said Butterfield.

"His hand was down by his side and it was a definite case of ball to hand.

"We had worked hard to get back into the game but sometimes you have to take the knocks and accept that thing didn't go your way."

Amesbury have two home games this week, with Blackfield & Langley on Saturday and Warminster Town on Tuesday.

"They are a couple of hard games, but on our day we can compete with anyone.

"We have tightened up defensively and we will see how far up the table we can get before the end of the season."
