AMESBURY Town made it three straight wins in superb style with a 6-3 victory against United Services Portsmouth.

Nic Turpin opened the scoring after 17 minutes when he took on a superb threaded through ball from strike partner Danny Western and beat the 'keeper Nathan Ashmore from 15 yards.

Western set up Turpin for the second goal on 26 minutes, crossing low from the right for a simple finish.

Danny Finnigan hit the bar just before the break so the Blues went in at half-time 2-0 up.

Portsmouth were reduced to ten men on 55 minutes when Dean Elvin picked up his second yellow card following a 16-man brawl.

Amesbury took full advantage and Finnigan set Turpin clear just before the hour. He rounded the keeper and flicked in for his second successive hat-trick, after the treble against Liss Athletic last week.

Finnigan made it 4-0 when he ran onto a diagonal ball and hammered it low past Ashmore.

Turpin got his fourth from another excellent Western pass on 66 minutes.

Substitute Andy Barker headed in a consolation for Portsmouth with 15 minutes to go. Then Duncan Smith conceded a last-minute penalty which Ashmore marched upfield to convert.

Phil Lawes' stoppage-time own goal meant the score suddenly had a respectable look for the visitors, but there was still time for Western to place a free kick into the bottom corner.

"That's the best I have seen Danny Western play, and it was great to see the front two firing," said manager Glen Butterfield.

"We have been able to get some consistency in the line-up and it has showed because we have scored 17 goals in three games.

"I thought Portsmouth were the most intimidating side we have faced but we played them off the park, and they are no mugs.

"My only criticism would be that we conceded three goals."

The Blues head to AFC Portchester on Saturday and Fawley on Wednesday full of confidence.

"We are capable of winning both," said Butterfield.

"Six points would help us achieve a top-ten finish which is what I was aiming for at the start of the season."
