CITY of Salisbury’s athletes turned in a range of fruitful performances across the country.

Chris Southern, pictured, produced an unstoppable performance in the Exbury Gardens 10k, winning with 33min 39sec.

Southern made a marked improvement on last week’s sixth place finish in the Salisbury 10-mile, surging past his competitors in the wintry conditions.

Further afield, in the contrasting sunshine of the Barcelona marathon, Clive Smith confirmed his recent good form on the road with an excellent personal best of 3hours 2mins 4sec.

Fiona Ross-Russell clocked 3.20.46 to take a similarly well-earned fifth place in her age group among more than 20,000 finishers.

Meanwhile, Eliot Haimes clocked a respectable 1.14.50 in the Reading half marathon, and Liz Roberts registered 1.50.44.

In the Linwood half, Sue Hazzard was delighted with her fourth-placed 1.48.49 to take second place in her age group.

Over the same 13-mile distance at Fleet, Nicola Yevko was timed at 1.24.42, while the Clements family notched a series of good times, including Katie who struck a pb of 1.41.51, Sue finished with 2.10.37 and Peter hit 2.10.38.

Elsewhere, two Wiltshire county champions at cross country, Alex Mundell and Hermione Seymour, were joined by a group of other young Salisbury athletes selected for the national schools’ championships in Derbyshire.

The pair were greeted by a tough combination of steep hills, deep mud and more atrocious weather.

Hermione finished an impressive inters’ 21st. Jaymee Domoney was beaten by the course and was one of many who failed to finish.

In the seniors, Alex finished 57th, Emma Clarke 132nd and Florence Powell 219th, all using this testing form of competition as background training for the upcoming track season.
