THE High Sheriff of Wiltshire scored a “fine penalty” when she paid a visit to a Salisbury Walking Football Club session on Wilton Road.

Dr Olivia Chapple was met by club president Jeff Maund, 76, who plays walking football three times a week and is a stalwart of the over 70s team that plays in the Southern League.

He said: “Once Olivia had sized up the opposition she took to the field and displayed her footballing skills, scoring a fine penalty”.

Dr Chapple said: “It was wonderful to meet the players at Salisbury walking football.

“This inclusive, very welcoming, volunteer-led group are brilliantly showing the power of gentle exercise and camaraderie to enhance older people's health and wellbeing.”

The emphasis in walking football is on providing a safe environment where men over 50 and women over 40 can enjoy playing the game.

Physical contact is kept to a minimum to avoid injury and the game is played a five, six or seven-a-side with the ball only ever below head height.

Dr Chapple is the High Sheriff of Wiltshire for 2024 to 2025. In the role, she supports the Crown and judiciary but has a focus on connecting people with nature under her chosen theme.
