A TEAM GB Olympic legend will make his way to Salisbury this October, bringing his hockey expertise to a junior training camp.

This half term Salisbury Hockey Club Head Coach Jon Royce is running a junior hockey training camp over October 30 and 31.

Jon is an international hockey coach with international experience at all age groups. He has been Head Coach at premier league Surbiton where he took them to runners up spot in the Premiership League.

Jon has also held positions as Head of Hockey at schools such as Kingston Grammar School and Bede’s School.

The camp is designed for players who have already started their hockey playing journey and would benefit from high level coaching.

Jon was able to confirm that John Shaw would be part of his coaching team for the camp. John is a multi-capped Olympian representing GB at Barcelona and Atlanta.

Domestically he was a stalwart of the premier Southgate team and went on to coach there starting at junior level and moving up to coach the Men’s 1st XI. Part of his early career was spent as a Salisbury player.

Jon explained what differentiated this camp from others: “It’s about experience, more than anything else.

"The difference between this and other camps is the people I have with me, John Shaw has 275 GB caps, and I have coached 100 plus international games at various levels. So, we have got a lot of experience and that’s what makes the difference.

"John and I have had experience of bringing tens of junior international players through to play senior international hockey.

Jon continued: "The camp will be graduated into different ages/levels so more experienced players will be in different group to less experienced players, but they will all get access to all coaches.

"I will take turns with each group as will John Shaw and any other coaches I get. Technique is core to the programme and the ability to apply that technique in the context of unit and gameplay.”

The camp will take place on Wednesday October 30 and Thursday October 31, from 9.30am to 3.30pm0 at Salisbury Hockey Club. It is open all age groups U10 – U18.

While the club does offer opportunities for juniors new to hockey this camp is for people with some experience of hockey
