In front of near on 300 supporters, Lavvy marked a day they dedicated to the club legend Chris Sevier who had passed away earlier this week, in dramatic late fashion.
Securing a place in the last 64 of the FA Vase, continuing their historic cup run against a stubborn Falmouth Town on Saturday.
The day began by both sets of colourful and noisy supporters warmly applauding the players out before holding a perfect 1 minutes silence with the last post echoing around the Dell.
That was immediately followed by a minute’s applause to mark Chrissy’s passing. His life long friend and football buddy John Pike our legendary groundsman joined the players at the centre circle placing a picture of his great friend alongside a wreath.
Then the action began. Both sides were careful not to give much away and it looked like a game of chess for the first 10 minutes. Lavvy soon kicked into gear and the big man, Chae Sykes got away from his marker before being hauled down in the box.
The roar around the Dell anticipating a goal was silenced as Adam’s spot kick was palmed away before the keeper brilliantly denied Chae a follow up. The keeper was at it again moments later, somehow blocking another effort by the big man.
Cam’s accurate cross was met by RJ who’s volley went inches wide and it was beginning to frustrate Lavvy who all but dominated the chances. Despite more pressing from both sides, it remained goalless at halftime.
The second half, much like the previous game saw Lavvy come out showing more intent and within 10 minutes they were 1-0 up. Adam burst through the middle before sliding in RJ who coolly slotted home past the on rushing keeper to give the home fans reason to celebrate.
From that moment, Falmouth looked resurgent, their travelling yellow and black army were in fine voice, clearly were driving their side on and pressure was beginning to mount on Lavvy’s goal. A couple of efforts wide were just the sighters as with 15 minutes to go, a full back’s cross was finished by the number 9. Levelling the game up and setting up a tense finish.
By now both teams looked like they had gone 12 rounds, legs were tiring and all allocated subs were used. As time ticked on, the referee announced 6 minutes of stoppage time and in the 94th minute, the moment came. A Falmouth cross was dealt with and Chae broke away like the galloping race horse he is. He played a perfect ball through to Russ who jinked his way into the box, his pass back to Chae on the adge of the box was perfect, the big man turned onto his right foot and bent his effort past the unsighted keeper to send the Dell delirious.
Lavvy saw out the remaining minutes with bodies broken but heart intact. The whistle blew, Lavvy marched on and the crowd were on cloud nine celebrated with their heroes long into the night.
Manager Liam McConnell said: "What a day, what a moment. A game and result fitting for a send off for a wonderful man. We just seem to have this heart that beats so loudly.
"The spirit of this club is unrivalled. We have players, staff, volunteers who will just give everything and today the club came together, we did this for Chris but the boys can be proud of their achievement today. For a small club like us to get to the last 64 is just crazy. But let’s recover for another game on Tuesday!”
