THE largest meteorite ever to have landed in the British Isles is now on display at Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum.
Weighing in at 92kg, the meteorite was unveiled by Colin Pillinger, professor of Planetary Sciences at the Open University, on Tuesday.
Prof Pillinger said: “It’s great it will be displayed in such a lovely museum. I’m delighted to be able to show it off.”
The meteorite landed about 30,000 years ago and spent 80 years sitting on the doorstep of Lake House in Wilsford-cum-Lake before being identified by the Natural History Museum as a meteorite in 1991.
Museum director Adrian Green said: “The meteorite is one of the most exciting discoveries we’ve had since I started five years ago.”
It is now on long-term loan to the museum.
