AN intrepid children’s TV presenter will be shown at the top of Salisbury’s cathedral spire on Monday.

Blue Peter presented Helen Skelton climbed to the top of the 123-metre spire last month to replace the red warning lights that warn aircraft of its presence.

She climbed 332 steps through the cathedral’s roof spaces to the base of the spire, up 44 metres inside the spire on ten narrow ladders, finally climbing through the weather door to climb the last 12 metres to the summit on the outside using special metal hoops set into the spire’s masonry.

She was helped by steeplejack Brian Moors who has been climbing the spire for the past 40 years to change the bulbs.

He said: “Helen was absolutely brilliant – I take my hat off to her. But the highlight of my day was Helen giving me my Blue Peter badge which I now wear with pride.”

The scenes will be shown on the show on BBC1 on Monday at 4.30pm, repeated at 11am and 5.15pm on December 4 and will be available on iPlayer until December 11.
