AN Army doctor from Tidworth has set a new world record for rowing around Great Britain.
Captain Hamish Reid, 28, joined forces with his fellow doctor, Captain Nick Dennison, from Bovington, to attempt the record-breaking trip to row non-stop and unsupported around the British mainland.
They set off on May 12 in their 24ft rowing boat and battled high seas, fierce winds and strong tides on the 2,100-mile journey, which came to an end at Lymington Yacht Haven at about 2.30pm on Thursday.
As they rowed across the finish line, delighted family and friends greeted them on a flotilla of boats and escorted them in for their first steps on dry land for 50 days.
“The main feeling about setting a world record is a great relief after putting in so much effort getting around, plus the two years planning over the course of that time,” said Hamish.
“Many experienced seamen told us it would not be practical to complete the journey, so we are delighted to be able to prove them wrong.”
Hamish, born on the Isle of Wight, is currently the regimental medical officer for 22 Engineer Regiment at Tidworth and is hoping to train in sport and rehabilitation medicine.
The pair hope to raise £20,000 from the expedition, which will be split between ABF The Soldiers Charity and Help for Heroes.
