THE achievements of young members of Ringwood School’s school council have been recognised by MPs in the House of Commons.
The Speaker’s School Council Award Scheme, headed up by Speaker John Bercow, is designed to boost interest among students in democratic values.
It recognises the achievements of councils, particularly where they have made a difference to a school, the local community or the environment.
Ringwood School plays a large role within the town council, with students working with councillors since 2007 on four committees and attending full council meetings.
It was one of 20 schools shortlisted for the award from more than 2,000 entries, and was announced as a runner up at the ceremony, held at the House of Commons on June 23.
Sixth form student Amelia Jenkinson said: “I really enjoyed the event and visiting Parliament.
“As well as our own personal achievement, it was great to see the sorts of things being done by other schools across the country; it's fantastic that so many students in both primary and secondary education are taking such an active part in student voice.”
