MORE than a thousand people turned out to take part in the annual Walk for Wards on behalf of Salisbury District Hospital’s Stars Appeal at the weekend.
Many of those taking part in the walk, held at Wilton House on Sunday, wore signs indicating their special reason for supporting the hospital by taking part.
Ian Newman, well known funeral director and chairman of Salisbury City Centre Management, addressed the crowd and instigated a moment of silence in recognition of the loved ones lost by some of those taking part.
He then officially started the walk with the help of Salisbury’s mayor Brian Dalton and babies Dara Hopkins and Blythe Sellers, who had recently received care in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.
Event organiser Hannah Paye from the Stars Appeal said: “The walk was our biggest and best ever and we are truly touched by the many very special reasons people had for taking part.
“It was a very poignant day with a wonderful atmosphere. We are truly grateful to everyone who walked and to all our main sponsors, Wilts and Dorset, hosts Wilton Estate and all of our volunteers and other sponsors.”
Early indications suggest the walk will have raised even more than last year’s total of £49,000.
