THE proposal to revive the weekly Wednesday market in Amesbury town centre has been discussed by members of the Stonehenge Chamber of Trade.

At their meeting last Wednesday, the idea was introduced to members by Bev Hutchinson – an Amesbury trader fighting to restart the market.

Ideas about where to place the market were explored, focusing on not taking away car parking spaces and not having a negative impact on other businesses in the town.

“While the chamber welcomes anything that brings business into the town, we would not want to see it being detrimental to our own traders,” said chairman John Todd.

“It was nice to know that Amesbury Town Council are exploring the possibility and it would be a joint consultation with the market traders, the town council and ourselves as to where and if it ever comes back to the town.”

Mr Hutchinson and fellow Amesbury trader Frank Best are hoping to revive the weekly market and are appealing for feedback.

Mr Hutchinson, who currently runs market stalls in Salisbury and Andover, believes reviving the market will benefit the town, especially when planned new coach spaces are installed in the central car park.

He wants to assure shopkeepers that they are more than welcome to start up a stall on the market to prevent produce and items being duplicated and taking trade away from the shops.

“It is open to any of the shopkeepers, the more the merrier,” he said.
