SALISBURY’S Christmas fireworks will be scaled down this year.
The budget for the display has been halved to £5,000.
But City Council organisers are hoping to add to the festive atmosphere by putting on ice skating in the Maltings for six weeks on a rink using real, rather than synthetic ice.
Negotiations are under way and they are enlisting local choirs, brass bands and entertainers to keep festive spirits high by performing at weekends and during late-night shopping on Thursdays at the Maltings, Old George Mall and the Cross Keys Chequer.
Business manager Claire Burden said: “Following feedback from residents and businesses we are actively seeking to involve the community this year and put on a whole host of entertainment throughout the festive season for everyone to enjoy.
“We would like to hear from anyone who may be interested in being part of our Christmas here in Salisbury.”
Last year’s Christmas lights and switch-on event cost £73,747. There was controversy when Wiltshire Council’s Salisbury Area Board refused a request to contribute £10,000 for the fireworks, saying it amounted to “burning public money”.
The budget for this year’s event, on November 25, is considerably lower at £59,391, including £5,000 from City Centre Management.
The city council has also saved money by awarding a new, cheaper contract for putting up and maintaining the lights.
