TWO stained glass panels designed by William Burges, the architect responsible for the reconstruction of Salisbury Cathedral’s Chapter House, are being sold at auction in the city on Wednesday (June 23).
The Arts & Crafts panels of saints are rated as of museum quality, and could fetch up to a quarter of a million pounds.
They were among 20 panels designed for a chapel at Castell Coch, the country residence of Lord Bute, in the 1870s. The chapel was demolished in the early 20th century.
All the other panels are in museum collections at Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch, making these two highly sought after by collectors.
Woolley & Wallis specialist Michael Jeffery said it would be good to see the panels reunited, but with museums dependent on public funding it might not be possible.
