WILTSHIRE Fire & Rescue Service is warning people about the dangers of lighting candles in their homes this Christmas.
During the winter months, and especially over Christmas, people turn to candlelight to add warmth, light and atmosphere to their homes.
But in previous years the service has been called to numerous fires caused by candles that have been left unattended.
Group manager Perry Payne, from Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service’s community safety department, said: “Candles seem like harmless fun, something that will brighten up a room or create an atmosphere, but if you don’t take the proper care, they can destroy your home.
“It only takes a few seconds to make sure a candle is safe, so please do follow our advice.”
A range of home fire safety tips is available by visiting www.wiltsfire.gov.uk. These include placing candles on heat-resistant surfaces, making sure candles are upright, keeping them away from fabrics and extinguishing them before leaving a room or going to bed.
