CHRISTMAS revellers are being urged to take care of themselves and not place extra strain on ambulance crews.
The Great Western Ambulance Service is facing what is traditionally one of its busiest weekends of the year as the party season reaches its peak.
Freezing temperatures forecast for Friday and Saturday nights are likely to add to the expected spike in 999 calls.
Spokesman Helen Stevens said: “We want people to enjoy their Christmas party, but a combination of alcohol and sub-zero night-time temperatures all too often leave them needing our help.
“We have produced a list of tips for enjoying a night out without ending the evening in the back of an ambulance. It means our vital clinical skills and resources are available for those with life-threatening conditions who really need us.”
Ms Stevens said before leaving home partygoers should have something to eat, drink plenty of water, and either book a taxi home or arrange a lift.
Once they are out, they should not mix alcoholic drinks, should alternate alcohol with soft drinks, and never leave their glass unattended in case it is tampered with.
“Do not feel pressured into joining rounds to keep up with faster drinkers,” she warned. “And drink some water before going to bed, to help re-hydrate you.”
