LED by their Squadron Leader, Major William Waugh, 96 soldiers from Egypt Squadron 2 Royal Tank Regiment marched proudly into their barracks on Sunday to the cheers of family and friends.
They were returning in time for Christmas from Helmand Province, where they took part in some of the bloodiest fighting of the campaign so far, playing a key role in the recent Operation Panther’s Claw.
For Major Waugh, it was the first time that he had met his 10-day-old baby son and he had an emotional reunion with his wife Georgina and their other two sons, Oliver, three, and two-year-old Charlie.
He said: “It is pretty amazing to see my son for the first time. I feel very emotional at the moment, but it is just wonderful to be back. It is fantastic to see my family.”
