WILTSHIRE Fire & Rescue is warning people to remain vigilant about fire safety this winter and have a fun and safe Christmas.
People are reminded to never leave their cooking unattended and to keep paper or cardboard decorations away from heaters, lights, fireplaces or candles.
Smoke alarms should be checked on a weekly basis, escape routes should be planned, fairy lights should be checked before use to check they are in good working order, blown bulbs should be replaced and candles should be blown out before bed.
Group manager Perry Payne from the community safety department said: “Christmas is the time of year where family and friends get together to celebrate.
“We don’t want to dampen spirits, but we do want to raise awareness of the danger and destruction an overloaded socket or an unattended candle can cause.
“By following these simple tips, hopefully we can all enjoy a peaceful Christmas that is safe from fire.”
