A FORMER Godolphin School pupil has returned for a visit 70 years on as part of the sixth form enhancement programme.
Audrey Catford was head girl at the school in 1939 and visited last week to reminisce on ‘war work’ undertaken when she was there, which included sewing sandbags and knitting baby garments for people living in the slums of Peckham.
During her visit she met the present head girl, Rosie Bond, who, alongside the rest of the sixth form, is continuing Audrey’s charitable legacy by completing the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
They are also taking part in the enhancement scheme, which encourages children to be involved in life beyond the classroom.
Some of the students have been working with children at Salisbury’s women’s refuge, while others have helped organise events at Elizabeth House, which supports disabled and mentally challenged people.
“It was lovely to meet Audrey and learn that the importance we place on caring for others is so ingrained in our tradition,” said Rosie.
