THE Trussell Trust is asking the people of Salisbury to show their generosity and kindness again for this year’s Christmas Box campaign.

Last year the trust hand-delivered 3,750 shoeboxes filled with gifts to people living in poverty in Bulgaria and they hope this year will be another success.

The idea is to cover a shoebox with Christmas wrapping paper and fill it with small gifts like teddies, toothbrushes, notepads and sweets.

Then the charity will take them to orphanages, schools, Roma communities and refuges in Bulgaria to bring a little bit of happiness and Christmas cheer to the people there.

Molly Hodson from the trust went on the trip last year. She said: “Watching people jostle over their position in a queue to get a box filled with things as simple as a toothbrush is a truly humbling experience. It is so moving to see an orphaned child open their Christmas box and take genuine delight in everything inside. I’ll certainly make a box again this year and we hope lots of people across Salisbury will get involved too.”

Richard Parsons, Bulgaria operations manager for the trust, said: “It is hard to describe the impact that a Christmas box can have. It’s not just the treasured gifts inside that make these boxes so special, it’s the acceptance and love that come with them. The knowledge that someone, somewhere cares.”

Boxes can be delivered to The Trussell Trust at St Michael’s Community Centre or LA Fitness in Salisbury, and the deadline for boxes to be in is Wednesday November 25.
