RINGWOOD Brewery staff are celebrating after one of their beers won a silver award at the prestigious International Beer Challenge.

The New Forest brewers’ picked up the award for the beer Old Thumper.

The challenge involves 30 expert judges from around the world blind tasting more than 300 beers and awarding gold, silver and bronze to the top entries.

Ringwood Brewery was founded in 1978 and started brewing Old Thumper ale in late 1979.

Old Thumper has won many awards and was voted Champion beer of Britain by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) group in 1988.

The highest scoring beers from the challenge will now be re-tasted by a separate panel of judges to find the best in each category as well as this year’s overall champion.

Richard Saunders, from the brewery, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have been recognised by international experts at these awards.

“Its fantastic that our local brewery has been singled out as it just shows what all of us have known here for some time, that we produce world-class beers.”
