ALDERHOT residents enjoyed a Give or Take Day on Saturday, with more than 100 people taking away almost a tonne of unwanted items that might otherwise have been dumped in landfill sites.
Organised by East Dorset District Council 's waste reduction team, Give or Take days have been held in many locations around East Dorset since 2007.
Residents bring along reusable items that they no longer need, although this is not compulsory, and can take items that other people have donated free of charge.
Gemma Coles, waste reduction manager for the council, said: “Give or Take Days encourage the reuse of items that would normally end up in landfill.
“They are attracting quite a following now as their popularity increases. I am sure the current economic climate has contributed to their growing success.
“The council is pleased that providing these days is helping increase awareness around what we throw away and whether these items could be reused by others instead.”
The next two Give or Take Days will take place at Holtwood Village Hall on December 5 from 9.30am to 12.30pm and at Sixpenny Handley Village Hall on January 30 next year from 9.30am to 12noon.
The council is always looking for volunteers to help arrange incoming items and anyone interested can contact the waste reduction department on 01202 886201.
