SALISBURY City under 15s added to their recent Hampshire Cup success by picking up the Wiltshire County Cup with a 3-0 win over Devizes Town.
The first leg of this historic double came with a comfortable win over College Youth in last month’s Hampshire County Cup Final, and the Wiltshire Final saw the all-conquering Salisbury side continue their good form.
Salisbury controlled the first half and two early strikes from Ben Brown were saved by the Devizes keeper.
However, in the 20th minute, Jesse Cutts gave City the lead their domination deserved when he picked up the ball on the wing, cut inside a Devizes defender and shot into the bottom corner.
Salisbury should have doubled their lead just before half time when a corner found Brown, who rifled his shot onto the crossbar. Joe Spratt connected with the rebound, but the Devizes ‘keeper made a good save to keep the score at 1- 0 going into the break.
Devizes came out stronger in the second half but strong tackling and a midfield and defence that were well marshalled by man of the match Harry Crisp kept Devizes at bay. Having soaked up the early pressure, Salisbury began to regain their momentum and looked to stretch their lead.
A great through ball found Brown, who took on the ‘keeper and slotted the ball home to double City’s advantage. Brown had a chance to put the game beyond doubt shortly after, when he cut inside and let fly from the edge of the box, but he was denied by the crossbar for the second time in the game. However, Brown did eventually get the second goal his hard work deserved when he fired home from close range with eight minutes to go. Brown went close again in the final stages after a neat exchange of passes with Josh Gregory, but he was denied his hat-trick by a fine save from the Devizes ‘keeper.
After the game City’s manager, Brett Bennett, said: “I would like to thank the boys for all their hard work and dedication throughout this season. “It’s been a pleasure working with them and they deserve everything they have achieved this season. “I would also like to thank coach Terry Pyke, Josh Best and Justin Bennett for all there help in training the boys.”
