If you are out and about in Salisbury at the moment you may have seen the Living River project busy in the River Avon between Fisherton St Bridge and Crane St bridge. With the help of many volunteers work is being carried out to restore the edge to the left hand river bank.
Original works were undertaken in 2000 as part of Salisbury’s millennium celebrations to create a soft bank for this heavily engineered stretch of river to encourage wildlife into the area. The works, designed by Cain Bio-Engineering Ltd and lead by Salisbury District Council and South Wiltshire Agenda 21, were very successful with native plants quickly colonising and water voles finding a new home. The works this summer have been undertaken to strengthen and repair the structure to ensure it will remain a good place for wildlife for years to come. Work will continue next year on the right bank.
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped including Salisbury residents and staff from Friends Provident, Wessex Water, Environment Agency, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Salisbury and District Angling Club, British Trust for Conservation Volunteers and Sparsholt College.
