AN author who has written 'action' filled novels set during forgotten parts of history is hosting a book signing later this month.

James Mercer, 39, lives in Salisbury and is completing his next novel ahead of his book signing in December.

Two of his books, part of the Turin Shroud trilogy, follow the “barbaric” events of the fourth crusade which took place between 1202 and 1204 – a point in history James saw to be rarely covered in literature.

The first book, 'The Crusaders Blade', is set in 1202. It follows Robert of Oldfield who is forced to flee England after killing a priest.

Joining a band of mercenaries destined for Venice he makes his way to where the Christians are assembling for the Crusade. On his journey from boy to manhood, he encounters a secret Brotherhood and their avowed enemy The Order of the Blooded Cross.

The second of the trilogy is 'The Crusader's Revenge'. It follows the same character, Robert, as he is wanted for murder fights for the armies of God under the mercenary banner of the Forgotten Army, led by the shadowy Commander Reynard. Meanwhile, a secret holy treasure, which if discovered, could change the course of history, lies in the ancient city of Constantinople.

James said: “I always look to go for those pieces of history which historians haven’t written about.

“These books are for people who enjoy history, people who enjoy action and people who enjoy adventure. I mean, these crusades were barbaric."

James has spent his life travelling across the globe and he has spent hundreds of hours extensively researching to fully inform his stories. His trips have involved trekking up Kilimanjaro to visiting Cathedrals across the country, although one remains his favourite.

He said: “Salisbury has been a big inspiration. I moved here when I was 15 and I have moved in and out since then.” He now lives close to the city centre and is fascinated by the Cathedral’s medieval origins, built around the same time as the fourth crusade."

On December 12, between 5pm and 7pm, James will be holding a book signing at the Royal George pub. Books can be purchased at the signing and do not need to be purchased in advance.
