A PRIMARY school pupil with a passion for songwriting has released her debut single, ‘Puppy Dog’ – and the song even has its own music video.

Lilly Stoodley, from Alderbury, who recently turned nine, started having ukelele lessons at Whiteparish Primary School around a year ago.

Her teacher, Gregory Cook, was immediately impressed with Lilly’s musical skill and her ability to craft catchy rhymes.

“Her mum and I were amazed because I have never taught anyone so young that has such a natural ability to write lyrics.

“I taught her how to structure a song, and she came back a few weeks later with a song that was so good I decided to record it and release it.

“She’s very excited about it. She wanted it to be a country song, and it came out as a country song that sounds like it should be on kids’ TV.”

Another of his students, a girl called Izzy Love, also features in ‘Puppy Dog’ thanks to her realistic impression of a dog’s bark.

“I helped Lilly a little bit to finish off some of the lyrics, and I put a drumline down using some software and recorded the bass, ukelele and some country guitar,” said Gregory.

“I taught her how to use a condenser microphone, and she learnt to use it on her first try, which is very impressive.

“I then taught her how to do vocal harmonies and, to my amazement, she was able to do it on the spot. On the same day, I got Izzy to bark into the microphone.”

The song was recorded, mixed and mastered over the course of around six months, and it was released on YouTube and Spotify on Friday.

The video, created using artificial intelligence, showcases Lilly's lyrics over images of animated dogs in colourful parks, fields and and beaches.

“A friend of mine called Kieran heard it, and he liked it so much that he decided that he wanted to make an AI video for it completely free of charge,” said Gregory.

“Lilly’s a really good singer, and it’s very unusual for an eight-year-old to be able to write something with a bridge, a verse and a chorus by herself.”
