FIREFIGHTERS responded to reports of smoke rising from the M&S premises in Salisbury on Saturday night – but the incident was soon closed as a false alarm.
Units from Salisbury, Wilton and Amesbury were called to the scene at 10.02pm.
The lights were switched on at the store, which usually shuts at 7pm on Saturdays, and the town's street wardens were present outside.
But the fire crews were soon stood down when they determined it was steam, not smoke, that was rising from the building's roof.
A Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service spokesperson said: “We were called to New Canal, Salisbury, at 10.02pm on Saturday (October 19) after reports of smoke rising from a commercial premises and an alarm sounding.
“Four crews attended, from Salisbury (x2), Wilton and Amesbury; thankfully, it was actually steam coming from the roof and the incident was closed as a false alarm with good intent.
“The stop was at 10.27pm.”
