A COUPLE have raised more than £1,000 for charity, after abseiling down Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower.

The tower, which stands at 170 metres tall, was the scene of husband and wife duo Dave and Alison Roycroft's daring abseil.

Taking on Spinnaker Tower with little to no experience of abseiling, the Roycrofts raised £1407, plus gift aid, for Young Lives vs Cancer.

Writing to the Journal, David said: "The day was filled with so many mixed emotions. We were thrilled to have raised so much money and humbled by people’s generosity and support."

The abseiller continued: "Neither Alison or I have abseiled from such a great height before so we did not know how it would feel. Alison was very apprehensive and tad nervous at the start but worked through those nerves.

"I felt apprehensive myself leading up to the abseil, but, when on the tower, I was relaxed and loved every minute of the experience and view.

"We just kept reminding ourselves why we were doing the event and the importance of raising funds for Young Lives vs Cancer in Gemma’s name.

"Our family cheering us on helped too!"

This time they raised money for Young Lives vs Cancer in honour of their friends' daughter, Gemma Fay.

Gemma tragically lost her life to cancer last year, but her family and friends have raised thousands to fight cancer in her memory.

Young Lives vs Cancer helps children and young people, from zero to 25 and their families 'find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them.'
