MOTORISTS can expect further delays on a main road into Salisbury for at least another month. 

That's because until Friday, October 25, gas works are being carried out on Wilton Road.

The works, which began on Monday, September 23, will be carried out by contractors FPF Utilities Limited, replacing the gas main on the A36 between Ringway Road and Wilton Roundabout. 

The works are required to address previous leaks on the gas main and will involve replacing old metal low pressure gas pipes with new plastic gas mains.

Due to the location of the gas pipe in the road, for everyone’s safety and to avoid road closures, temporary traffic lights have been installed.

Its the latest in a long line of gas works in Salisbury in recent months. 

It comes just four weeks after SGN discovered multiple gas leaks on Wilton Road, A36, and began carrying out repairs on Monday, August 26.

The works were finished on Thursday, September 5, but the traffic lights remained in operation until Monday, September 9, prompting anger from Wiltshire Council leader Richard Clewer. 

The work will be carried out in two phases.

Monday, September 23 to Friday, October 25:

Along the A36 Wilton Road between its junctions with The Kingsway and North Street and on a short section of The Kingsway, temporary multiway traffic lights will be manually controlled from 7am to 7pm every day.

Monday, November 11 to Thursday, November 21:

The final section of replacement work on the Wilton roundabout. Temporary multiway traffic lights will be manually controlled from 7am to 7pm every day.

Access to side roads and properties will be maintained.

Bus routes may be affected, Salisbury Reds has been contacted for comment.

A SGN statement read: "We're sorry for any inconvenience these works may cause. We understand how disruptive work on the A36 is for road users and the local community - replacing the gas main is the only permanent solution to addressing the ongoing leaks and disruptive emergency repairs.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding."
