A man will face trial for seven charges of coercive control, assault, and intentional strangulation of a Basingstoke woman. He denies the charges.

Kali Bartley, 44, of Hanwell in London, who is remanded in jail, appeared via a video link on Wednesday, September 18, to deny the charges put towards him at Winchester Crown Court.

He is accused of two counts of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship between April 1 and August 19, three counts of assault or actual bodily harm between April 1 and July 14, and two counts of intentional strangulation between May 1 and July 14.

The charges say Bartley repeatedly or continuously engaged in behaviour which was controlling the victim’s movements, how she bathes and eats, and isolating her from friends and family through violence and threats of violence.

According to the charges, Bartley’s behaviour had a serious effect on the woman, and he knew that the behaviour would have a serious effect on her.

Judge Timothy Mousley set five days for the trial starting from Monday, February 17.

Nicola Sully appeared for prosecution, while Jennifer Morris appeared for the defendant via a video link.
