The top ten places to live in Wiltshire have been revealed by online lifestyle website Muddy Stilettos, which saw Salisbury, Mere and Tisbury make the list.

Salisbury was voted second-best by the website’s readers, with the nearby villages of Mere and Tisbury coming in at eighth and ninth respectively.

Justifying the world-famous cathedral city’s podium position, the website said Salisbury was, ‘full of medieval splendour, windy streets, gothic architecture, a large market square that plays host to festivals and markets, a cluster of funky independent shops and restaurants and a racecourse.’

The site also called on prospective visitors to ‘hot foot it’ to Stonehenge and connect with their ‘inner druid.’

Readers were told to connect with their 'inner druid' at Stonehenge

Taking a rural turn, Mere was dubbed ‘picture perfect’ due to its central market, ‘higgledy-piggledy’ streets and houses, as well as its dose of English charm.

Tisbury was highlighted for its two-thousand-year history, epitomised by its 12th century church and Old Wardour Castle.

The website went so far as to call the largest village in the Nadder Valley ‘seductive,’ due to its mixture of architecture and vibrant high street.
