A new community initiative designed to tackle loneliness experienced by older men has been launched at a Verwood care home

Every month, Verwood House Care Home on Ringwood Road will host their 'Gentlemen’s Supper Club’ where men can socialise, enjoy refreshments together, and in turn boost their wellbeing.

The club, which is open to anyone in the community, meets on the last Thursday of every month. It was founded by Verwood House’s customer relations manager, Donna Milne-Barron.

Donna said: “I came up with the idea based on several of our gentlemen whose wives are here at Verwood House. They have all had a similar journey and spend most of their time visiting our lovely home.

“When they come together, it is lovely to hear them laughing and having such a good time socialising with each other."

"Loneliness can have such an impact on people’s mental health. The gentlemen who’ve attended our club all recognise they are experiencing similar circumstances, which gives them common ground and plenty to chat when they spend time together at Verwood House.

“We know there are plenty of older men out there who would also benefit from that social connection. Our main message is to talk; don’t think you are alone. Our home is your home.”
