Under guidance from the Home Office, employers are told: "Employing someone who is not allowed to work in the UK is illegal. As an employer you have a duty under the 2006 Act to carry out document checks on people to make sure they have the right to work in the UK before you employ them.

"If you do not carry out these checks and you are found employing an illegal worker, we will take tough action against you.

"You could face a large fine, known as a civil penalty, under section 15 of the 2006 Act for up to £10,000 for each illegal worker.

"An illegal worker is someone subject to immigration control, who is aged over 16 and who is not allowed to do the work in question."
