TWO Just Stop Oil protestors remain on bail after they vandalised Stonehenge a day before summer solstice.

Orange powdered paint was sprayed on the ancient monument at around midday on June 19.

Protest group Just Stop Oil took responsibility for the incident and named the vandals as Oxford student Niamh Lynch, 21, and 73-year-old Rajan Naidu from Birmingham.

Two months on, Wiltshire Police confirmed that two people are still on bail and that enquiries are ongoing.

A spokesperson for the force previously said: "A man in his 70s and a woman in her 20s were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, damaging an ancient monument and deterring a person from engaging in a lawful activity.

"It follows reports that an orange substance had been sprayed on some of the stones by two suspects."

The paint was removed the following day and summer solstice went ahead as planned but many were left "deeply saddened" by the incident.

A spokesperson English Heritage said: "The ancient stones are a testament to the desire of people – from prehistoric times to today – to connect with nature, the earth, the sun and the moon, as well as crucially, each other.

"We can’t understand why anyone who professes to care for the environment would attempt to harm such a monument and to distress people from all over the world, including those for whom Stonehenge holds a spiritual significance."

The case continues.
