A woman from Redlynch celebrated her 100th birthday with an afternoon party.

On Tuesday, August 6, Dorothy King celebrated her 100th birthday, surrounded by family and friends at Pembroke House on Fisherton Street.

Dorothy was born in Redlynch August 6, 1924, living with her mother, who was a housekeeper.

She attended Morgan's Vale Junior School, later moving to Downton Senior School, and then in 1939, Dorothy worked at a meat factory in Downton before moving on to work as a paint sprayer in Salisbury.

In 1971, Dorothy worked at a college doing general duties and worked in the restaurant until retirement at 70.

Guests at the celebrations included colleagues of Dorothy's that had remained friends since she retired.

Ian Nutbourne, who retired at the same time, said: "She really loved the job, she was so enthusiastic about it. What a wonderful woman."

She waited until Ian was of retirement age to retire herself, 30 years ago.

Another former colleague Geoff Bishop added: "She's just a lovely lady."

Dorothy moved into Pembroke House in 2001 and used to enjoy bingo, days out, WI meetings, socialising, buying clothes and handbags, until her eyesight deteriorated.

Her party brought plenty of sparkle to the house, food and drinks, two cakes and a sentimental telegram from King Charles and Queen Camilla.
