Plans to build 49 houses in Laverstock will be discussed at Wiltshire Council's upcoming planning meeting.

An application made by Hallam Land Management & Velcourt Group Ltd proposed the building of up-to 49 dwellings with green infrastructure and children's play, as well as a sustainable urban drainage system and utility buildings on the land.

The land proposed for the development would be an area of agricultural land east of Church Road in Laverstock. The south of the land situates playing fields of Wyvern St Edmund's school, and to the north is a small residential area.

Plans were initially submitted in 2021, proposing the building of 135 new homes and 50 space car park, but were scaled back in March 2024 to 50 homes.

The Council's highway officers concluded that there was no highway objection to the scheme, subject to conditions including the provision of two puffin crossings on Church Road, two sheltered bus stops with real time information and resurfacing.

Laverstock and Ford Parish Council has objected to the plans for reasons including the application being "premature in relation to the emerging Wiltshire Local Plan" and would "prejudice the plan making process"; a "contravention" of existing and emerging spatial planning policies; a lack of local needs for housing, "adverse impacts" on landscape sensitivity, vehicular traffic and pedestrian traffic.

Chairman of the Laverstock and Ford Parish Council Nick Baker said: "I am very disappointed to read the officers report and I will be attending the presiding planning meeting to strongly put forward the parish council’s view that this is an inappropriate development and the timing of it considering this application is still undergoing the local plan making process.

"We all know there are traffic problems on Church Road – there are many reasons it is inappropriate."

He added: "We recognise that we need to build more houses".

Wiltshire Council's Local Plan sets out the vision and framework for housing, infrastructure, and land suitable for employment growth identifying sites for housing and employment development until 2038.

The recommendation made is for the Council to grant planning permission. The planning committee will meet at the County Hall in Trowbridge at 10.30am on August 14.
