HOMES were evacuated after someone punctured a gas main in Amesbury.

Emergency services placed a cordon around Mill Green Road, off Boscombe Road, at around 1pm on Monday, July 29.

A gas main in Lyndhurst Road was reportedly damaged by a digger.

Police and the fire service maintained a 100m safety caution around the leak, evacuating everyone in proximity.

Residents could not return to their homes until the evening.

A video sent to the Journal shows hoses spraying the digger near the gas leak.

SGN engineers made a temporary repair to the gas network in Lyndhurst Road following damage from a "third party".

Bradley Barlow, a spokesperson for the gas distribution company, said: "Residents are returning to their homes tonight (July 29) and the temporary road closures have been lifted.

"We’ll need to return in the coming days to make a permanent repair but we plan to do this with minimal disruption and hope to avoid any further road closures.

"Thank you to the local community for your patience and understanding today and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused."
