Hilary Jack’s addition to the Cathedral’s new art exhibition has caused some furore.
I don’t invariably welcome modern art, I’ve never quite got over Tracey Emin declaring her unmade bed to be art.
My unmade bed is available I believe Jack’s sculpture is very effective, addressing the important issue in my flat for viewing by anyone who thinks it might be edifying.
Aactually this depiction of the offensive desecration of coastal subsidence, is imaginative and effective.
It is there to challenge, to seek attention and to inspire discussion and debate. It has certainly achieved that.
It’s a pity so much of the discussion is around condemnation and criticism of how the artist has decided to depict this frightening and ever-growing problem. The outrage of homes falling into the sea as a result of climate change cannot be ignored.
I’m not always a fan of modern art, but I think this piece is effective and can be provoking in a positive way, given a willingness to be challenged.
Yours sincerely,
