Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has made a statement in response to an ongoing incident at Marks and Spencer on Friday evening.

On Friday, June 28, fire crews and police were called to the scene on New Canal amid reports of "smoke and a smell of burning".

A spokesperson from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to the Old George Mall, Salisbury at 7.12pm tonight (June 28) after smoke and a smell of burning were reported in the M&S store.

"We have crews on scene from Salisbury, Amesbury (x2), Romsey and Ludgershall, together with a support appliance from Devizes and the aerial ladder platform from St Mary’s in Southampton (with support appliance).

"Investigations are on-going to determine the cause of the smoke and burning smell. The store was evacuated safely.

In a further update at approximately 9.30pm, the spokesperson added: "We’ve now established there was a small fire in a flat roof where building works had been underway earlier today.

"Crews are now ensuring that this is fully extinguished but we are starting to scale back and expect to be away from scene fairly soon."
