Salisbury Samaritans is looking for new volunteers to join its team as part of a "rewarding" role.

Samaritans are a charity offering 24/7, free listening support for people who are emotionally distressed. Every 10 seconds, a call is answered for help.

In 2023, more than 3.3 million calls were made to Samaritans from across the UK and Ireland, where over 200 branches exist.

The Salisbury and District branch of the Samaritans first opened in 1962, and is based in Barnack Business Centre.

140 trained volunteers across a variety of roles are part of the Salisbury team, and they are particularly looking to recruit support volunteers and trustees.

Branch directors are Hester Houlihan, 39, and Jen Annetts, 46.

Hester said: “Knowing there’s a place for people to call 24/7 when things seem most difficult - that is really important.

“The reason why most people start volunteering is to support people on the phone, but we want to make sure we recognise that there’s a lot of other roles people can step into.”

These roles are vital to the running of the branch and help in non-listening roles such as admin, fundraising, publicity, marketing and governance.

Anyone interested in these roles should email info@samaritansofsalisbury.org.uk or visit the website.
