Trains were slowed for two hours, while safety checks were carried out by Network Rail on the bridge. At 11.30am, trains were able to return to their normal speed.
This is not the first time this particular bridge has been struck, as the bridge was listed in the top 10 "most bashed bridges" in Britain in 2021.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “Network Rail responded to a report of a bridge strike that took place at around 9.30am this morning on Warminster Road, Wilton.
“We have signage in place at the junctions surrounding the bridge and also at the bridge itself to give drivers plenty of opportunity to stop. We work closely with the haulage industry to encourage drivers to know the height of their vehicles through our “Wise Up Size Up” campaign which aims to reduce the risk of bridge strikes and the unnecessary delay they cause passengers.”
The height of the bridge is marked on each side for road users.
