Ringwood's new mayor recently helped refurbish a resident's Singer sewing machine at the Ringwood Repair Café on July 8.

The machine's original owner, Councillor Mrs Rae Frederick's mother, was a RAF nursing officer, and she purchased it new in the 1940s, taking it worldwide on various assignments in Germany, Egypt, Singapore and finally Ringwood.

After years in storage, it was found to be inoperative.

Frederick and fellow volunteer, Simon, cleaned the machine’s moving parts, rethreaded the tension disc and repaired its handle, restoring it to its former glory.

"I was delighted to test the stitching under the guidance of the customer after Simon had repaired her mother’s beloved sewing machine, and we had a lovely chat about sewing projects we’ve each done over the years."
