It was interesting to read of the proposed Broken Bridges Nature Reserve, and the possibility of the footpath being improved between Harnham and Bemerton.

Frankly, it would be a real improvement if this path were upgraded to a restricted-byway, that cyclists could legally use it - I led many guided cycle rides over it about 25 years ago, it was always a fun though zig-zag way of getting between these two key parts of our city, but I tried it last week, and it is virtually impassable due to the extant tree roots and encroaching foliage.

Mr Nettle is a Conservative Councillor, and it is seemingly on their watch that the Broken Bridges path has been allowed to degrade - as a local Councillor, he has it in his influence to seek immediate improvements to this right of way, without any reference to some posited charity venture.  Widen the path and improve it for all users now!

As a former cycling campaigner in Salisbury, I recall sitting on Cycle Liaison Panel meetings 25 years ago with local and county officers, planning and implementing cycle routes for the City of Salisbury, when the Lib Dems held both authorities, the result being pro-active improvements for both walking and cycling, including the Bishopdown-Laverstock path, Avon Valley path extensions, Churchill Gardens and Southampton Road, Piggy Lane, Whitebridge/Riverbourne Rd, Odstock Road, and a host of cycle-parking stands.

Politicians seem keen to make us vote thinking of our wallets only, but I prefer to think of the environment, and the future of transport in our country, wearing my yellow-shirt as I cycle about.
