A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Remember to always keep an eye on any bonfire you are having and make sure that it is far away from anything that could catch fire."
The service has advised anyone planning to burn off garden waste to site their bonfires well away from buildings, fences, trees and garden structures.
Safety tips for starting bonfires
A garden hose should always be on hand in case the fire starts to get out of control.
Bonfires should not be lit on windy days as it could make the blaze flare up unexpectedly.
Flammable liquids such as petrol or paraffin should never be used to start a bonfire.
If you're planning a substantial bonfire, you should be courteous to your neighbours and let them know.
The fire service also has an online form for controlled burning to prevent false alarms.
