MAINTENANCE work has started on a historic bridge near the centre of Salisbury.

The works will last for ten weeks, and started on Tuesday (May 28).

According to one.network, it is just for "minor maintenance and painting works".

A flotation deck has also been built underneath the bridge.

The footpath and underpass both remain open.

A sign on the bridge explains that it formerly carried  the railway over Castle Street.

It was removed and placed in its present position in 1898.
