Salisbury Manor running D-Day event for the public

On Thursday, June 6, Salisbury Manor will hold a 1940s themed garden party with team members dressed in the decade’s attire.

The lamp, which represents the peace that followed the end of World War Two, will be lit in the evening by resident Tony Child, 95, a Royal Air Force veteran and former mayor of Kingsbridge.

He will be assisted by the mayor of Salisbury, councillor Sven Hocking, the chairman of the Royal British Legion (RBL), Chris Child, and three other RBL members who will all be dressed in full military dress uniform.

1940s themed food and fish and chips will be served, as well as live entertainment featuring the "D-Day Dollies".

Skye Williams, general manager at Salisbury Manor, said: “Here at Salisbury Manor, we’re thrilled to be marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day with the help of the community.

“Reminiscence activities are a great way for older people, especially those living with dementia, to connect with those around them and maintain a sense of identity. In the run-up to the day, residents have been sharing their own stories and it’s been inspiring to hear everyone’s experiences and memories from wartime Britain.

“On behalf of the whole team, I’d like to extend our welcome to anyone interested in coming along for what we anticipate will be an informative and enriching day.”

Salisbury Manor is part of national care home provider Care UK, who are partnering with royal pageant master Bruno Peek, CVO OBE OPR, coordinator of ‘D-Day 80 Lamp Light of Peace’.

Over 100 Care UK homes will take part in the nationwide tribute.
